Cartoon movies today are not only for children but have valuable lessons in them also for adults. The cartoon movie Finding Nemo has lessons we can mention that we can learn from. You can relate to some of the feelings of the characters in this movie. Think about the widowed clownfish named Marlin who constantly warns his son of the ocean's dangers (although he is clearly subjecting his son to his own neurotic agoraphobic tendencies. To describe Agoraphobia, it is an anxiety disorder which primarily consists of the fear of experiencing a difficult or embarrassing situation from which the sufferer cannot escape. Agoraphobics may experience severe panic attacks in situations where they feel trapped, insecure, out of control, or too far from their personal comfort zone. In severe cases, an agoraphobic may be confined not only to their home, but to one or two rooms, and they may even become bed-bound or a recluse). I want to mention this because many times with the fear and anxiety that comes from dealing with being deep in debt a person may experience what Marlin suffers from. One may get so depressed it could immobilize them and they have difficulty even getting out of bed or getting out of the house. One may feel trapped because they feel there is no hope in getting out of the huge debt they are in. Marlin’s tendencies are to be a worry-wart. Isn’t this a common thing for us to do with all the debt that we have and the bills that are constantly coming in?

Throughout the movie Marlin demonstrates his anxiety and fears however, he runs into a fish named Dory (voice by Ellen DeGeneres), who has a tremendous good attitude in life in spite of some disabilities such as suffering from short-term memory loss and she can be sensitive at times. In a scene in the movie when a diving mask falls deep into the ocean and Marlin gets upset because he is afraid to swim down into the deep dark ocean and feels there is no hope in finding his son. He knows what is written on that mask is the answer to where his son would be found. This is the lesson we can look at with our debt that we owe. Visualize that deep dark ocean being how deep in debt we are and the mask being the answer to finding our freedom from that debt. We are afraid to swim down into the deep depths and darkness of our problems we are dealing with just like Marlin was afraid to swim down. Marlin wanted to give up and felt there was no hope. Well visualize Stop Big Spending being the fish Dory keeping the attitude of the following:

Dory: “Hey Mr. Grumpy Gills…When life gets you down do you wanna know what you gotta do?

Marlin:” I don’t wanna know what you gotta do.”

Dory: “Just keep swimming, Just keep Swimming, swimming, swimming, swimming. What do we do? We swim, swim.”

Marlin: “Dory, no singing.”

Dory: “Ha, ha, ha, ha, ho, I love to swim. When you want to swim you want to swim.”

Marlin: ”See I’m gonna get stuck now with that song…Now it’s in my head!”

Dory: “Sorry.”

When you are having a tough time reaching your goal, of paying off those debts just sing that song in your mind, just keep swimming or in other wards just keep plugging away at it and you will reach your goal just as Marlin persevered to find his son, you will find your way out of debt. Sure it will take time, depending how in debt you are, however, keep a good attitude in life, just like the fish Dory and it will help tremendously!

Being defeated is often a TEMPORARY condition.
Giving up is what makes it permanent.
